Introduction

The use of Photoshop in web design is very popular among designers in many countries across the world. This is because many designers find Photoshop easy and convenient to use. Graphics can easily be extracted from PSD files. Additionally, there are a wide range of third party plug-ins and tools available for use ,which make the work of designers (who use Photoshop) easier than when using other alternatives.

Step 1: Download Photoshop from the internet, and then install it.

Step 2: Open it on the PC and then create a new document with the desired width and height (recommended-width; 800-900px, height-1200-1500px).

Step 3: Create a suitable header for the site, with the desired website logo inserted in it.

Step 4: Create menu buttons for the site (i.e. color and shape, with a space in between, as the bottom or upper menu. It’s possible to combine up to three sets of menus.

Step 5: Create adequate spaces to insert the following; content, footer (s), banners and photo gallery, among others.

Step 6: Slice and export the finished site. All the slices should be named appropriately before exportation.

Step 7: The content area should be left empty. This is to allow the addition of content for every page separately.

Step 8: Export the product to a fresh file on the desktop. This will result in the automatic creation of an HTML internet page, an image file (complete with different images and slices) and a C SS file.

Step 9: Use Notepad or OneNote to open HTML file, and then effect the changes in HTML (by centering the whole page, setting the background color, inserting the content into a table and creating the Meta Data, etc).

Step 10: Copy and then paste the HTML page several times (depending on the number of pages), and thereafter rename them as; Home, Contact us, About Us, Services/Products).

Important Tips

The following are important tips that must be considered during the use of Photoshop in web design:

Sketch first: It’s important to first buy a sketch book that contains sketches. The sketches should then be translated in Photoshop.

Use of a grid system: to ensure that the final product has perfect alignment, a grid system (that contains PSD guides and templates for gutters and columns) should be set up during the initial stages.

  •  Turn on Snapping’: this can be achieved by clicking View-Snap-View-Snap-guides. This will reduce squinting of the eyes.
  •  Organize the PSD: all the layers should be named appropriately, and put into folders.
  •  Master the shortcuts: to ensure optimum use of time, master the shortcuts that will be used most of the time, such as; Cmd+Opt+Shift+S, Cmd+U, Cmd+Opt+I, Cmd+L, Cmd+Opt+C, among others.
  •  Carefully add ‘drop’ and ‘noise’ shadows, and other important filters.
  • 08 Make use of ‘Smart Objects’ and ‘Layer Comps’ to compile several files into a central file.
  •  Use the globalizing masks intelligently (to enhance efficiency).
  •  Carefully refine the masks.
  •  Incorporate the drop shadows (by decreasing the opacity or using any other dark colors apart from black).
  •  Learn to use the pen tool (used in drawing illustrations).
  •  Enhance the appearance of photos by using the ‘high pace’ to vary the opacity.
  •  When exporting images, make use of consistent colors.
  •  Avoid using the default settings.
  •  Ensure the layout is perfect.
  •  Personalize the work space.
  •  Neatly organize the files.
  •  Be original: avoid copying other designers’ ideas.
