Using VPS Hosting for Designing Websites

Sep 25, 2015 by

Have you ever wondered where you can develop in a live environment to see if everything works 100% correctly? If you’ve been developing locally, then you know that there are times when you thought that everything is working perfectly fine, but then when the time comes to deploy your months of hard work into a live server, tons of bugs appear? If you’ve encountered that event at least twice, I’m pretty sure that you’re really frustrated right now. But there is a good news for you! You can easily develop and design web apps using a live hosting option. How? Learn more.

Choosing the Best Hosting Option

You’ve probably heard the three most common hosting options, which are shared, VPS and dedicated. Shared hosting isn’t the feasible option if you are going to develop tons of web applications. Dedicated hosting on the other hand can be very pricey if you’re just building a medium scale website. Therefore, the perfect balance between price and performance is VPS web hosting option.

Setting Up Your VPS

If you are a web designer, you need to make sure that you’ve properly setup your VPS server. There are several things that you need to do before your VPS server gets into shape. One of the very first thing that you can get when you start a VPS hosting is the Virtuozzo power panel.

This is like the control panel/WHM software that you’re probably very used to, if you’ve used shared hosting services before. However, unlike the latter, Virtuozzo power panel comes with an advanced feature-set. This is the control panel that you will use in managing your container (or space, your own VPS). You can do things such as reboot, start, stop, and reload using the power panel. In addition to that, this power panel allows you to view statistics, resource usage and install new software to complete your developing environment.

However, keep in mind that this power panel is only used to maintain your container, you still need to install WHM and/or cPanel for your day to day hosting needs. Now, you know that the power panel can install additional software, you can now choose what software you need. But typically, PHP, Ruby, and other popular server side prerequisites are already installed by the hosting company for you.

Installing Software

If you haven’t used Linux before, then you might be wondering how to install software on your VPS. If you’ve learned Linux before, you won’t have a hard time installing any new software because you already knew the commands.

All you need to do is to use the command “sudo apt-get install software_name_here” for Ubuntu, RPM or YUM for CentOS. For more information about them, you can read this.
